All three brands do the core job well: app control, scheduling and remote access. Where they differ is in ecosystem, multi-zone support and interface. Hive is the brand we recommend most often because it's straightforward to use, reliable in day-to-day operation, and works well for households that just want dependable control without a steep learning curve.

Nest suits households already using Google Home devices, with a strong learning algorithm that adjusts to your routine over time. Tado's multi-room support is the strongest of the three if you want individual room control via smart radiator valves, though it typically costs more to set up fully across a whole house.

None of the three is a bad choice mechanically; the decision usually comes down to what you want to control, what other smart home devices you already have, and budget for extras like additional room sensors or radiator valves.

S-plan systems use separate motorised valves for heating and hot water, wired to a programmer. Y-plan uses a single mid-position valve controlling both. Modern boilers increasingly support OpenTherm, a two-wire digital connection that lets the thermostat modulate the boiler's output directly for more efficient, steadier heating rather than simple on/off cycling.

Fitting a smart thermostat onto an OpenTherm-compatible boiler generally gives better results and efficiency than onto an older S-plan or Y-plan system, because the boiler itself can respond more precisely to demand. We check which configuration you have and, where OpenTherm is available and not yet enabled, we can usually set it up as part of the install.

Multi-zone heating lets you set different temperatures in different rooms or areas, useful in larger homes or properties with rooms used at different times of day. This is typically achieved with smart radiator valves (TRVs) that communicate with the main hub, most commonly seen with Tado and Hive's multi-zone products.

It's a worthwhile upgrade for bigger houses where heating the whole property to one temperature wastes energy on rooms that are rarely used, such as spare bedrooms or utility rooms. For smaller flats and terraced houses, a single-zone smart thermostat usually covers what's needed without the extra cost of valves on every radiator.
