Panel, column and towel radiators compared
Panel radiators are the standard choice for most rooms, available in single, double and double-convector configurations offering different heat outputs for the same wall space. Column radiators, with their vertical tube design, suit period properties or feature walls where appearance matters as much as output, and can be more effective per unit of wall space than a standard panel in some configurations.
Heated towel radiators are typically fitted in bathrooms and combine heating with drying, either plumbed into the central heating system, run on electric elements, or dual-fuel for both. Choosing the right type isn't just aesthetic; it affects the radiator's heat output (BTU rating) and therefore whether it can adequately heat the room it's going into.
TRVs and system balancing explained
A thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) lets you set an individual temperature for that specific radiator, useful for rooms that need to run cooler or warmer than the rest of the house, such as bedrooms versus living rooms. TRVs work alongside, not instead of, the main system balancing.
Balancing means adjusting the lockshield valve on each radiator so that water flows through the whole heating circuit at the correct rate, ensuring radiators furthest from the boiler heat up at a similar rate to those nearest it. Without balancing, radiators nearest the boiler often overheat quickly while those at the far end of the system stay lukewarm, regardless of how new or correctly sized the radiators themselves are.
Sizing radiators correctly for the room
Radiator output is measured in BTUs (British Thermal Units) or watts, and the correct size depends on room dimensions, window size and glazing, insulation levels, and ceiling height, not simply matching whatever radiator was already there.
