Cumbernauld is where Pioneer Gas Services is based, and being local here is not a line on a website: it is Old Tower Rd, G68 9GE, a five to fifteen minute drive from most of the town depending on which side you are on. That proximity is why so much of our diary each week is filled with Cumbernauld addresses, and why a breakdown call from the town itself is usually the quickest one for us to reach.

The town's layout works against a one-size-fits-all approach to heating. Cumbernauld was built as a new town through the 1960s and 70s, and that means whole neighbourhoods share a similar build era but very different construction details depending on which phase they went up in. Compare a maisonette off the town centre with a semi in Abronhill or Condorrat and you are looking at different wall constructions, different flue routes and, often, boilers that were squeezed into whatever cupboard the original architect left spare rather than where you would choose to put one today.

Westfield and Balloch, on the south and east sides of the town, are mostly 1970s and 80s estate housing: cavity wall semis and terraces with combi boilers that by now are frequently on their second or third replacement. These are usually straightforward properties to work on, but the original pipework sizing was often done for a smaller, less efficient boiler than what people fit today, so getting the flow rates right on a like-for-like swap matters more than people expect.

Newer development at Craigmarloch and around Dullatur is a different job entirely. These are later-build, better-insulated homes, often with combi boilers installed to modern building standards and condensate runs that were designed with winter freezing in mind, at least on paper. In practice we still get called out on hard frost mornings to a Dullatur or Craigmarloch combi that has locked out because a poorly lagged external condensate pipe has iced over, cutting off the boiler's ability to drain safely.

Central Belt winters are the constant across every part of the town. Cumbernauld sits high and exposed compared with much of the surrounding area, and it earns its reputation for wind and driving rain. That combination of altitude and exposure means external pipework, flue terminals and boiler casings take more weather than a similar house nearer sea level, and it is a real factor in fault patterns we see locally: condensate freezing, wind-affected flues, and corrosion on external components that would last longer somewhere more sheltered.

Water here comes off Scottish Water's central supply and is soft rather than hard, which is generally kind to heat exchangers and cylinders, but it does not stop sludge building up in systems that have never been flushed; plenty of Cumbernauld homes are still running radiators that were plumbed in during the 1980s and have never had the system cleaned. That shows up as cold bottoms on radiators and a boiler working harder than it should to heat the same rooms.

Whatever the job, an emergency repair on a Sunday, a landlord certificate ahead of a tenancy renewal, or a full boiler installation, you are speaking to and dealt with by the same engineer from the first phone call through to the final handover, because that is genuinely how the business is set up: it is Peter doing the work, not a rotating team of subcontractors.
